New Food Adventures
Having a special diet with your significant other can be really fun. When you go to the grocery store together, you can make it a point to try new foods and experiment with different flavors.
A great benefit of being in a health-conscious couple is that you're more likely to stumble upon new healthy food that you might not have otherwise tried. When your partner discovers new health foods and then brings them home, you'll be more inclined to experiment with these new foods.
This has happened to Jon and myself many times. One day last summer, Jon brought home some red cabbage and we've been on a cabbage kick ever since. Another time when we were shopping in Whole Foods, I came across kasha -- a staple food from my childhood that I hadn't seen for some time -- and we brought some home. We've been eating kasha several times a week ever since!
Of course, sometimes new food adventures don't always pan out the way you intend them to. We ate barley for several months last year -- which I never liked but Jon was having a go at -- until one fateful evening when we overdosed on a barley "stir fry." We felt really sick afterwards and never brought it back into our kitchen again.
Just like trying new restaurants, you can experiment with different foods and new cooking styles. Jon and I like to try different kinds of fish and we often ask the experts at our local seafood vendor for advice on what is fresh that day or what might be good to try. They usually give us some great tips on how to best prepare the fish too.
When two people cook the same ingredients but do so in different ways, various cooking styles emerge -- and often contribute to you arriving at a new, delicious dish. One day I put too much water in the pot while preparing lentils, and because it looked like a soup I decided to grate some fresh ginger in. It was delicious! Jon then took my lentil-ginger soup and added quinoa the next time around, which soon became a highly enjoyable dish in our household.
I could keep going on and on with more examples. By the way, you should check out our recipes section for some of the foods we love and how best to prepare them. But the point here is to try new foods and cooking styles with your boyfriend or girlfriend.
