Keep Healthy Food at the Office

One of the biggest obstacles that stands in the way of you and your fitness goals is being able to overcome craving when you're under stress -- something I see happen to colleagues at work all the time.

Mestemacher bread with avocado is a great option to eat at the office.  Keep the bread at your desk (it won't go bad) and bring in some avocados at the beginning of each week.

Let's say a deadline gets pushed up and you have to stay at your desk through lunch, or you've just realized that a formula somewhere in your Excel Worksheet is incorrectly calculated.   You will soon be forced to spend the next twelve hours powering through your work -- and if it's the Excel task, the associated tediousness will prove stressful.  Suddenly, there's barely any time to eat, let alone drive up the street to the nearest health store.

Let's suppose that on top of all of this, you didn't bring a lunch with you.  What happens? You're at the mercy of whatever is available in your cafeteria or office vending machine -- and no matter what you choose, these options are usually unhealthy.

The best course of action is to prepare for situations like these . Here are a few helpful tips:

It's wise to keep a hearty supply of fresh fruit at your desk.  When the boss catches you off guard with an involved assignment, you'll be able to push through it without having to resort to the vending machine.

1) Keep apples, bananas, or any other fruit that you like in the office refrigerator.

2) Make sure you have avocado and Mestemacher Bread on hand.

3) Maintain a healthy stash of canned sardines at your desk.

4) Stock up on dried fruit and nuts so you have something to snack on.

Sardines, Mestemacher bread, nuts, and dried fruit stay for long periods of time -- and it's easy to keep them at the workplace.  Feel free to help yourself to a handful of almonds and dates between meetings, or toast a piece of Mestemacher with some avocado slices for a quick bite.  These options are a much better alternative than eating the frozen bagels in the office freezer, or whatever pastries someone happened to bring that day.

The ideal is to have a relaxed, healthy lunch where you sit down and enjoy yourself.  But if you're pressed for time, you need to make sure you have healthy food at your disposal.

Nobody is perfect, so there will always be days you forget your lunch or you're running late without time to pick up a healthy meal.  Or you might be asked to work late, through your lunch break, or at some other time you weren't expecting.  Know this will happen, accept it, and be sure to prepare ahead of time.
