Live Like an Athlete

An important pillar of the AFC philosophy is approaching life like an athlete.  This means taking on each day with the mindset of a sportsman – everything from diet, exercise, sleep, preparedness, to how you spend your free time.  The goal is to maximize performance in daily life, and so every effort should be targeted at making you feel the best you possibly can.

The athletic approach should pervade your daily life -- from your rest habits to your dessert.  Here we have a healthy dessert of frozen banana with cinnamon, walnuts, and raisins.

The goal of any athlete is to perform optimally in competition.  This can only be accomplished through discipline, hard work, and dedication to the right practices on a consistent basis.  Of course, you have to let loose every once in a while – but the key is “once in a while” because deviations from your athletic routine should only be pursued at the right moment and for the right purpose.

It’s difficult (and rewarding) to apply the athletic approach to life at large -- and it’s a unique individual who would want to follow through with it.  After all, why would you alter your habits and routines if you’re not looking to maximize performance on the court or field – and not even getting paid for it?  But you have to keep in mind that taking on life from an athletic standpoint isn’t about the money, and it isn’t about whether or not you’re competing in an event – it’s about investing in yourself on a daily basis so you can feel your best, stay healthy, keep fit, and live a happy and fulfilling life.  Who knows, taking the steps to incorporate sports into your daily life might even extend it several decades in the process.

During my time playing college tennis and even after on the pro circuit, I saw many sportsmen neglecting their responsibilities.  They would eat badly, drink regularly, and neglect proper rest habits – whether it was failing to stretch consistently or not getting enough sleep.   If you were privileged to have had an athletic upbringing – and have the opportunity to compete at a high level – you should take pride in this, because the majority don’t have this experience.  And if you didn’t have the chance to become an athlete, it doesn’t mean you can’t take active measure in your daily routines to live like one.

Having a companion who's onboard with the same mindset has made all the difference.

It’s time to start getting disciplined and start living like an athlete!  The benefits of the athletic lifestyle are extraordinary.
