America's Fittest Couple Leaves America. Gets Fitter.
AFC left the Homestead this week for a month-long vacation in Spain. They Couple has just arrived at their first destination: Valencia -- and they plan to drive up the coast to Barcelona later in the month. The Couple hasn't left the U.S. since 2013, and so they determined it was time again to venture out and see what else the world has to offer. AFC hopes to enjoy their time abroad, while learning more about how to take their fitness to an even higher level.
Jon will be competing in prize money tennis tournaments throughout the trip, and he's expecting some high level competition. Spain is great because the majority of tennis is played on red clay court, which is conducive to extended rallies -- leading to a high aerobic output. (Clay is also beneficial because it is a soft surface -- and so playing on clay, as opposed to hard, preserves the body and prevents injury.)
During the trip, Lyuda plans to continue improving upon her cardiovascular endurance. She's already made a great deal of progress this spring, and will use this momentum as a springboard for more advancement in the weeks to come. Lyuda's goal is to participate in Ultra Triathlons at the start of 2017.
Despite a long plane-ride across the Pond, the Couple has made sure to stay on top of their fitness routines in the initial days. Jon has played several practice matches and Lyuda has gotten in a couple of extended runs.
In addition to the workouts, AFC managed to fit in a bit of tourist activity too. They went to “La Cuidad de Artes y Ciencias” (The City of Arts and Sciences), and enjoyed some meals out at typical Spanish “tapas” bars (the food wasn’t as healthy as they would have liked, but – after much debate -- they agreed to make a concession for the “experience”). Fortunately, the Couple was able to burn off the "Jamon Serrano" and salted peanuts of the "almuerzo" (lunch) by power walking for several hours through the city, exploring various neighborhoods and historical landmarks.
